Police and school officials say the lockdown at American University's campus in the nation's capital has been lifted.
The campus in the city's northwest section went on lockdown just before 8 p.m. Wednesday following a report of a man with a gun.
Washington Police spokesman Officer Hugh Carew says the department received the report about 7:40 p.m and that officers searched the campus.
The university posted an all-clear on its website about 9:25 p.m., saying the campus could resume normal operations.
According to our affiliate, WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., police said that an American University student noticed a man with a gun in his holster on a university shuttle bus and took a picture, then called police. That picture was later circulated on social media by AU's official account and prompted the campus lockdown.
Officials said the man with the gun on the bus was an off-duty officer. It is not known what agency or jurisdiction he works for.
