A local lawyer has become the first female federal judge in the Western District of New York.

On Thursday, Senator Charles Schumer announced Elizabeth Wolford was confirmed by the Senate by a 70-29 vote to serve as a judge. Wolford grew up in Fairport and graduated from Colgate and then Notre Dame Law School.

"I am thrilled to see Buffalo- and Rochester's-own Elizabeth Wolford confirmed by the Senate for a seat on the Western District federal court," said Schumer. "For a long time, one of my goals has been to bring a woman to the federal bench in Western New York. Liz will not only do that, but she will also bring her considerable experience and first-rate legal mind to the bench; she is simply one of the finest judicial candidates I have ever met and I am glad to see her ascend to the bench of the Western District."

She was recommended by Senator Schumer and will replace Charles Siragusa who retired from the federal bench in December.
