News10NBC has learned Rochester Fire Department Chief Salvatore Mitrano will retire effective December 31, 2013.

At a news conference Friday morning, Mitrano says he got a phone call from the mayor-elect Thursday afternoon telling him that he would not be part of the new administration going forward. He says he re-applied and wanted to stay with the department but says he also expected change during the mayoral transition.

Mitrano told us today he's proud to have had the chance to lead the department. “Chief Sheppard said it about the police department, it's the same thing with the fire department. The men and women of this department will do their job day in and day out regardless of who is at the top of the chain. I've just been fortunate enough to have been at the top of the chain during a very good time for us."

Mitrano says he’s not sure what’s next for him. He’s been with the department for more than 26 years and was named chief last November.

No word on his replacement.
