A Livingston County plant has shut down for good after a fight with neighbors about how that closure could affect their drinking water.
As of midnight, AkzoNobel desalination plant in Leicester was barred by the DEC from pumping any salt runoff water out of the ground. It’s been doing that since a mine collapse in 1994 to make sure the drinking water is safe but both the company and DEC say it's no longer needed.
A release from the company and the DEC says the pump's closure would only affect groundwater below the area's drinking supply.
