New research shows why the baby of the family will always be treated like one.
Researchers in Australia surveyed more than 700 mothers and nearly all said their oldest child seemed to grow overnight when their second child was born. However, when asked to guess the height of their children by marking a blank wall, mothers consistently underestimated the baby of the family by about three inches, while accurately guessing the oldest's height.
The researchers say this shows a mother's perception of her youngest child is skewed and that these children may be treated like they are younger than they really are.
