I-Team 10 Follow Up: Fire hydrants exempted

I-Team 10 has a follow-up on a new regulation that would have cost city and county taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. It now looks like fire hydrants will be exempt from new lead standards that go into effect next month. It all stems from efforts to make drinking water safer.

The new EPA guidelines had included fire hydrants even though they're rarely used for drinking water. The city and county have hundreds of brand new hydrants in their inventories that they would not have been allowed to use.

In an email to I-Team, an EPA spokesperson said, in response to feedback it received, it concluded that hydrants should be excluded from the new standards.
