This may be welcoming news for homeowners. Local business and state elected leaders are calling for the state to take action and help decrease property taxes.
On Thursday, the Rochester Business Alliance threw its support behind a new proposal called “Unfunded Mandate Reform Act”. The legislation calls for the state to take a look at the many programs it demands local governments to offer residents.
The problem is some leaders claim the state does not provide funding for the services, leaving homeowners to foot the bill in increased property taxes.
Senator Ted O'Brien said, “It gives the legislature to review plans for all kinds of existing mandates and literally do that analysis: is the benefit outweighed by the burdens to taxpayers?”
The legislature is expected to vote on the proposal within 30 days.
