President Obama has signed legislation allowing money you donated to go to firefighters affected by the Christmas Eve tragedy in Webster and their families.
Nearly one year ago, Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were shot and killed after responding to Lake Road. Ted Scardino and Joseph Hofstetter were also shot, but survived.
After the tragedy, people started sending money to the West Webster Fire Department. But because of an IRS law, the department couldn't distribute the money without losing its tax-exempt status.
Senator Charles Schumer and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter released a statement Friday about the today's signing by the President.
“In the true spirit of Christmas giving, President Obama’s signature on this critical legislation means that the victims and families of the West Webster Fire Department tragedy will, at long last, receive the donations intended for them. We are heartened that the generosity of neighbors, friends and strangers alike will bring some measure of support and relief to the families of our finest heroes this holiday season.”
