UPS is apologizing to customers Wednesday after telling them thousands of holiday gifts will not be delivered in time for Christmas.
UPS, the world's largest package delivery service, said the "unpredictably large number" of shipments had overwhelmed the system, and that the company has no capacity to handle all the deliveries as scheduled.
The delays are affecting customers nationwide.
Despite the problem, UPS says its drivers will not be delivering packages on Wednesday to make up for delays. Workers at the company's international air hub in Kentucky will work on Christmas night to sort packages for delivery the next day.
The company said it expects a majority of the packages to be delivered on Thursday, the day after Christmas.
