Thursday marks nine years since the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami. Around 230,000 people died in more than a dozen countries when a 9.3 magnitude earthquake created the huge waves.
There were no sea-level monitoring instruments in the Indian Ocean before that tsunami. After that tragedy, a network of warning centers and agencies were put into place to help predict the next earthquake or tsunami.
