The city of Rochester's ambulance service will be paying up nearly $3 million to settle a federal lawsuit. It claimed Rural/Metro defrauded Medicare.
Federal officials accused the company of billing Medicare for transporting people during non-emergency situations. Rural/Metro doesn't admit to any wrongdoing and simply says the settlement is a way to avoid a costly court battle.
The $2.8 million payout will not affect the company's restructuring after filing for bankruptcy protection this year.
