Two top Democratic leaders in the state Assembly and Senate are backing legislation to hold New York's primary elections for state offices in June instead of September.

They say the switch will save local governments about $50 million with voting the same day as federal primaries.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver calls combining primaries in June a practical solution that will also encourage voter turnout.

Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins calls it a common sense approach.

Senate Republicans have opposed the June date, saying it conflicts with the legislative session. They've recommended August for state and federal primaries.

A judge set the June federal primary to ensure time for sending absentee ballots to military and overseas voters, but acknowledged it could change.
