New York City's new mayor says he's focused "like a laser" on keeping the city safe from an approaching icy, windy snowstorm.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said hundreds of plows and salt spreaders would be on the streets as soon as the snow starts falling.
The city is under a winter storm warning, with 6 to 8 inches predicted by Friday. Areas upstate are expecting up to 14 inches.
Forecasters say the snowfall will be accompanied by some of the coldest temperatures in years.
De Blasio did not declare a snow emergency. He says he will wait until morning to decide whether schools will open Friday.
He asked New Yorkers to keep an eye out for neighbors' welfare.
