Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is warning vendors against price gouging as New Yorkers stock up on supplies in anticipation of a nearing winter storm.
Schneiderman wrote to the vendors Thursday, reminding them that General Business Law prohibits increasing the costs of essential items and services during natural disasters or other events that disrupt the market.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared a statewide emergency in anticipation of the storm. Meteorologists say the frigid, windy snowstorm could bring gusts up to 45 mph and up to 10 inches of snow.
Schneiderman asked those who notice sharp increases in the cost of items like food, water, gas, generators, batteries and flashlights to file a complaint with his office.
He said the rule also applies to services like tree trimming and snowplowing.
