An installation mass was held Friday for the ninth bishop of Rochester Catholic Diocese. It's the first time since 1979 that a new bishop has been installed.
Bishop Salvatore Matano is officially taking over, replacing Bishop Emeritus Matthew Clark. Matano, most recently, was the bishop for the entire state of Vermont.
Matano will now be in charge of 300,000 catholics in a 12 county area. There are more than 100 parishes in the Rochester diocese.
A number of dignitaries, including Mayor Lovely Warren and Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks was there. Some of the highest ranking U.S. officials in the Catholic church were also there. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York was not able to make the installation for Bishop Matano due to the weather.
Bishop Salvatore Matano said, “How I wish I could name you all because you are all so important. And now you the dear people of Rochester have become my family and the diocese of Rochester has become my home."
