State officials say Governor Cuomo plans to announce an executive action this week that would allow limited use of marijuana for individuals with serious illnesses in New York State, according to a New York Times article published Saturday.

According to the article, Governor Cuomo's plan will allow 20 hospitals across the state to prescribe medical marijuana to patients with cancer, glaucoma or other diseases that meet standards to be set by the New York State Department of Health.

The article says the state hopes to have infrastructure in place this year to begin dispensing medical marijuana. However, it is too soon to say when medical marijuana will actually be available to patients.

Governor Cuomo's announcement is expected Wednesday during his annual State of the State address.
