About a 75-mile stretch of Interstate 81 north of Syracuse to the Canadian border is closed as heavy snow and winds gusting to 40 mph make driving hazardous.
The highway was shut down Monday night when Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for more than a dozen upstate counties. The state Department of Transportation says Tuesday that I-81 was closed between Exit 31 at Brewerton, just north of Syracuse, to Exit 45 at Watertown in Jefferson County.
DOT says the 25-mile stretch from Watertown to the Canadian border has also been closed.
DOT officials say there's no estimate yet on when the highway would reopen.
I-81 cuts through the Tug Hill Plateau region where 4 to 5 feet of snow is forecast by the time the storm subsides on Wednesday.
