A U.S. defense official says four crew members were killed when a U.S. Air Force Pave Hawk helicopter crashed in a coastal area of eastern England during a training mission this evening.

The Air Force says the helicopter crashed at about 6 p.m. local time near Salthouse on the Norfolk coast. It was assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing and based at the Royal Air Force station in Lakenheath, Suffolk County. An Air Force statement says the helicopter was flying low at the time of the crash.

Local police cordoned off the area where the crash occurred, and fire, coast guard and police officials are at the scene. Police say they do not believe anyone in the area has been injured.

Pave Hawks are often used for combat search and rescue missions, mainly to recover downed air crew members or other personnel during war.
