It’s a big loss for the Pittsford community. School officials say a popular social studies teacher and coach for Mendon track and cross country has died.
Jason DeJoy passed away unexpectedly Tuesday. DeJoy, a teacher at Barker Middle School, was only 40 years old. On Facebook, those touched by DeJoy have been posting messages since learning of his passing. One said, “Thank you for always believing in me when at times it didn't believe in myself.”
He taught social studies and was a highly-respected cross country coach for both the boys and girls at Mendon. DeJoy won a state title and 10 sectional championships with the boys team but his success was defined through those he mentored.
DeJoy is survived by his wife Arlene, and their daughters, Josie, Angelina and Libby.
Calling hours will be held at Anthony Funeral Chapels in Brighton from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on January 9 and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on January 10. DeJoy's funeral mass will be held at The Church of the Transfiguration in Pittsford on Saturday, January 11 at 10 a.m.
