We expect to learn more Friday about a planned grocery store for Rochester’s East End.
News10NBC has learned from the owner that Hart's Local Grocers, a whole foods market, and will be located on Winthrop Street.
Ever since Wegmans left Midtown years ago, there's been talk about the need for a grocery store downtown. Now it appears that it’s happening.
There are three other grocery stores to the east, Price Rite on Culver, Wegmans on East Avenue and Tops on Winton Road.
This is good news for people in the East End. There are more than 6,000 people living in downtown Rochester right now and thousands more are moving in. Officials say as tore like this is definitely needed and should succeed especially with all the growth that is expected in this area within the next few years.
Heidi Zimmer-Meyer of the Rochester Downtown Development Corporation said, “The model is a little bit different than a standard grocery store. There are a lot of ways that a business like that can think differently about tapping into a market that's got a lot of facets to it. That's kind of exciting and it depends on the owners and what they want to do. I'm sure whoever they are they will likely be testing a lot of different things.”
Zimmer-Meyer says the store will be located in the heart of East End so that means it will be able to tap into a lot of neighborhoods
The 21,000 square foot building will share a small portion of space with the Little Theater Café, and it has more than 100 parking spots for customers.
We asked residents what they thought. Antoinette Beatty said, “I think it's great. It's more convenient to me. Closer to my house.
Sean Hantes said, “It's great especially in the winter time when you don't want to go anywhere. Just take a little walk down the street, get your groceries and you're on your way.”
Again we will be learning more about the new store Friday.
