A teen is under arrest, in connection with a video that surfaced on the internet. We talked with Monroe County’s District Attorney about this case Thursday.
The video was posted on a number of social media sites within the last week. It shows a young man walking up to an older woman and hitting her in the face. Investigators say they were able to track down the suspect.
The 16-year-old is only charged with a violation of his interim probation. He appeared in front of Judge Castro Thursday.
District Attorney Sandra Doorley says the allegations in this video serve as a basis for that violation. Doorley says he will be held accountable, and she says this should be a warning for people-young and old who use social media.
"Unfortunately the social media aspect of itself is not an enhancement of the crime, when we look to this we've got to look to the underlying actions of the defendant," said Doorley. "You know there could be several ways to look at this, whether it is potential assault, harassment or a potential hate crime depending on the nature and character of the victim."
It has not been determined if the 16-year-old will face even more charges. Right now he is being held without bail and his next court date is January 14th.
