Volunteer fire companies safe under Affordable Care Act

Created: 01/10/2014 9:48 PM WHEC.com

Lawmakers say volunteer fire companies won't be forced to comply with what's known as the employer mandate of the Affordable Care Act.

The mandate requires employers with at least 50 full time employees to provide affordable, adequate health coverage to those employees.

For tax purposes, the IRS classifies volunteers as employees.

There was concern these volunteers would be counted, and fire companies would be forced to provide coverage. Friday, the U.S. Treasury sent a letter to Congressman Chris Collins and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, telling them those volunteers would not be counted toward the totals under the law.
