Senator Chuck Schumer is making a push to save people in the Rochester area money on their heating bills.
The senator announced that $169 million in additional funding will be coming to the Home Energy Assistance Program, a program to help seniors and low income families offset the high costs of heating. Overall, this means $3.4 billion will be handed out across the state.
Senator Schumer says the Rochester area will get the largest portion of that money.
Senator Chuck Schumer said, "This will mean that seniors on fixed income, who are having trouble affording the cost of fuel to heat their homes, will get it for February and March. There are, as I said, tens of thousands of senior citizens in the Rochester area who will benefit and they can breathe a sigh of relief this afternoon."
Senator Schumer says last year, over $1.5 million households throughout the state received money from HEAP. The additional funding means the state will be able to help even more New Yorkers throughout the rest of winter this year.
