Legislation to help employees with new babies or in the middle of a family emergency. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in Rochester to announce the family and medical insurance leave or "family" act.
The legislation creates a national paid leave program, meaning employees no longer have to choose between their paycheck or family needs. It doesn't just benefit the employee.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said, "This kind of policy could really help businesses. Because what businesses know is they've trained an employee. That employee knows what they're doing, they want to retain that employee and so when these family emergencies come up, whether its a new baby or an ill family member, they know they would rather have that employee come right back to work when they're ready and not have to find a new employee and train a new employee."
The announcement was held at Hedonist Chocolates in the South Wedge, a business with only 15 employees. The shop's owner says without this legislation, she wouldn't be able to afford to offer coverage like this.
