"Combat gum" designed to fight plaque on your teeth

Created: 01/21/2014 6:44 AM WHEC.com

Imagine being able to chew gum to make your teeth healthier. Researchers in the U.S. Army are testing its newest creation right now.

The gum contains a chemical that your body naturally produces to kill bacteria in your mouth. When you chew it, you will have another layer of protection against plaque.

Researchers call it "combat gum" because four out of 10 military recruits enter the service with at least three cavities. Any necessary dental work is done before* troops deploy.

Doctors say the gum will hit the market in about five years. Combat gum would probably be introduced in the same way as nicotine gum. First doctors would prescribed it and then you could buy it in the store.
