Local congresswoman Louise Slaughter could have a new challenger this fall. Current Gates Town Supervisor Mark Assini announced Thursday night that he will run for the 25th Congressional District.
Assini says, "Washington, right now, is in such gridlock and it's frustrating because this is a great country. The solutions to continue our greatness are not complicated solutions and to see Washington just fighting in the most partisan fashion when the answers are right in front of us."
Slaughter will be running for her 15th term in November. She's faced over a dozen republican challengers over the course of the past 30 years. Most recently, her opponent was Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks in 2012.
Louise Slaughter's spokeman said in response to Assini's announcement, "Monroe County has sent Louise Slaughter to Congress because she's a tough fighter who delivers results for the constituents she is proud to represent. Upstate New York has a tradition of rejecting Tea Party politics and electing trustworthy leaders like Louise who work hard to rebuild our region's economy. We look forward to discussing our region's future, and to earning each and every vote."
