A local psychiatrist is out of jail. Dr. William Lewek, of Rochester, posted the $350,000 bail early Friday afternoon. He was arrested last week after the body of a missing man was found in his backyard.
Dr. Lewek has been locked up for more than a week, but around noon, he posted bail and was released from custody.
Lewek’s bail was $350,000. Prosecutors wanted it even higher because they fear he’ll leave town. He charged with tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.
Lewek was arrested last week, a day after the body of Matthew Straton was discovered partially covered in the backyard of Lewek’s house in the Park Avenue neighborhood. The 31-year-old had been missing since October.
But Lewek didn’t walk out the jail after posting bail. He was first transported by the sheriff’s department to a local hospital for an evaluation. That’s the normal procedure for some inmates who are on a 24 hour watch while at jail.
Late Friday afternoon, I-Team 10 went by his home on Rowley Street, but no one answered when we knocked. Dr. Lewek also operated an office for psychiatric patients at his home. Straton’s family does not believe Matthew was seeing Lewek for psychiatric help. Why Straton was at Lewek’s house is still not clear.
Lewek has not been charged with Straton’s death. According to court documents, Lewek only told police he moved the body from a third floor bedroom and tried to conceal it in the backyard. The medical examiner has still not ruled on how Matthew Straton died.
