A new law goes into effect today and it affects every newborn baby.
Starting today, the state law requires all babies to get a heart screening test before they're discharged from the hospital. The simple exam can help identify heart defects.
The procedure, called a pulse oximetry test, measures the baby's blood oxygen levels. It helps doctors identify dangerous heart problems that can otherwise go unnoticed. Doctors say nearly one in every 100 babies can have heart defects.
Governor Cuomo signed the "Pulse Ox" law into effect last August.
