A New York politician is suggesting that a new bridge being built over the Hudson River be named for the activist folk singer Pete Seeger.

Seeger died Monday at 94.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner notes that Seeger fought to save the river from pollution. He says naming the bridge for Seeger would inspire people who travel across it to keep the river clean.

The bridge is being built to replace the current Tappan Zee Bridge between Westchester and Rockland counties in the New York City suburbs. It is scheduled to open in 2018.

Feiner said he's sending his suggestion to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and members of the state Legislature.
