Officials are investigating the stabbing of a 20-year-old inmate at Wyoming Correctional Facility. It happened last Friday.
Investigators tell News10NBC Traquinous Strickland was going to lunch around 1 p.m. when he was stabbed in the chest by another inmate. Moore was taken to Erie County Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery.
We are told officers did not find a weapon where the stabbing occurred but a subsequent search of two dorms yielded several makeshift weapons. According to officials, this incident is the latest in a series of assaults that have taken place at the facility since the beginning of the year. During one six-day period, there were seven inmate on inmate assaults with one slashing and one assault on an officer. Officials say the incidents appear to be gang related
"This incident is the latest in a string of assaults at this facility since the beginning of the year. Many appear to be gang related. As we continue to see a more violent inmate population along with overcrowding of facilities, these types of assaults will continue. This makes it a very dangerous environment for our members to work in," stated Mike Dildine, New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association Vice President of the Western Region.
No one has been charged in connection with the stabbing. The investigation is ongoing.
