Just days after Oscar winner and Fairport native Philip Seymour Hoffman died of an apparant heroin overdose, a new report is out on heroin deaths in Monroe County.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating nine deaths related to heroin from December 5 to January 21. The chief toxicologist for the county says the deaths appear to be the result of heroin containing Fentanyl, which is a very potent chemical. The Medical Examiner's Office says "this is a new phenomenon in our area."
Investigators in New York City are looking into whether the chemical was also involved in Hoffman's death.
The report released Tuesday also breaks down the number of heroin related deaths in Monroe County from 2011 to 2013. During that time period, the number of deaths quadrupled from 11 in 2011 to 65 in 2013.
