Have you received a phone call from a number you didn't know, and the person on the other end hung up?
The Better Business Bureau says consumers in Upstate New York and other states say they've received calls like this on their cell phone. If the consumer calls back, they're connected to a paid international adult entertainment service or chat line outside of the country.
The Bureau says you shouldn't answer the phone if you receive a call like this. It also advises you not to call the number back. If you do, scammers may put unwanted charges on your cell phone bill. It’s a practice called “cramming.”
The Bureau says the calls often originate from the following area codes: the Dominican Republic (809), Jamaica (876), British Virgin Islands (284) and Grenada (473).
Again, if you receive one of these calls, you're advised not to call back and to also keep a close tab on your phone bill.
