For the first time in Olympic history, there will be a team competition in figure skating.
There is also a movement to get the Olympic Committee to add synchronized skating as an official event. There are now world competitions.
In Rochester, Mirror Images Club has teams that compete on a national level. News10NBC was Thomas Creek Ice Arena for their practice Thursday morning. Their coach describes the sport, which started as precision skating and has really evolved from the days of Ice Capades and skaters marching in lines and shapes.
Jessica Stratton, coach, said, “You’ll see intersections where the skaters are actually making trying to go through each other in tight spots. The higher up in level you go, you’re going to be adding difficulty with backwards and speed with different angled approaches. You'll see a lot of unique things. It's a real fascinating sport to actually watch.”
One of the Mirror Images teams won a silver medal at the Eastern Conference Championship last weekend in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This weekend’s tournament is in Lake Placid, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.
