(Rochester, NY) – The Rochester Lancers (5-11) gave the 8,212 fans in attendance an entertaining show despite falling to the first place Milwaukee Wave (11-2) by a score of 15-7. The Lancers got goals from three different players, including a 3-point effort by leading scorer Mauricio Salles. Goalkeeper Gavin McInerney was back in goal for the Lancers after missing the last four games with a foot injury and he made 11 saves in the loss. The Lancers were officially eliminated from playoff contention with the loss and will host their upstate New York rival Syracuse Silver Knights next Saturday evening at 7pm at Blue Cross Arena.
The visitors scored first just over nine minutes in when Giuliano Oliviero found Philip Suprise in front of goal for the one time goal to give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead after the first quarter of play.
The Lancers would draw even a little over six minutes into the second when Joey Tavernese won the race to a rebound of a Doug Miller shot and finished into the open Wave goal. Less than two minutes later, Salles gave the Lancers their first lead of the game with a screamer off his left foot from beyond the 3-point arc, giving Rochester a 5-3 lead. With the half coming to an end, Ian Bennett took a long range shot that eluded McInerney to make it 5-5 at the half.
The Wave re-took the lead less than three minutes into the second half when Judson McKinney finished a Hewerton pass off the end boards. Less than two minutes later, Victor Quiroz set up Bennett for his second goal of the game after a nifty display of passing. With a little over six minutes left in the quarter, Giuliano Oliviero fed Bennett for his third goal of the game making the score 11-5. Less than a minute later, the Wave struck again when Nicolas Perera set up Carlos Munoz for the back door tap in to give the Wave a 13-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
With under five minutes left and Edgar on as the sixth attacker, the Lancers got a powerplay goal when Miller set up Gary Boughton in front and he slotted it home. Less than a minute later, the red-hot Bennett netted his fourth goal of the game after McKinney set him up with Edgar out of the goal as the sixth attacker to make the final score 15-7 for the Wave.
