Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield and St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center have teamed up to help people in our area get healthy.
Excellus officials tell News10NBC the company has provided $90,000 of support over the past four years to the center's Health Empowerment Program.
The goal is to help lower-income people in our area who are struggling with weight or pre-diabetes issues improve their health.
News10NBC talked to one woman who says she not only feels better because she lost weight, she also feels more empowered now.
“People say that I'm happier. I found myself driving down here a week or two ago, and I thought I was really in a dark place and I didn't even know it. I've had people say there's a glow about me now. I'm just happier. I'm a happier person,” said Sue Ellen Antkowiak, who lost 30 pounds on the program.
While its first round of support is nearing the wrap-up stage, Excellus says it's continuing to support the center through a grant it’s giving to St. John Fisher College and its nursing program.
Nursing students are providing some of the resources available to the center now.
