Police say a man who barged into his estranged wife's apartment in violation of a protection order has been shot dead by an officer who had been called to the scene earlier.

Auburn Police Capt. David J. DelFavero tells the Syracuse Post-Standard that officers were called to the apartment shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday on a report that an estranged husband was violating an order of protection.

DelFavero says the armed husband entered the apartment while police were interviewing the wife. He was fatally shot by one of the officers.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name hasn't been released.

DelFavero says the investigation is in its initial stages and more information will be released later.
