The speculation continues to grow in Henrietta about where the Seneca Nation might build a new casino and News10NBC is trying to find out where that location would be. The town had previously said it was looking in the commercial district between Jefferson Road, West Henrietta Road and the I-390 expressway.
Since the news broke that the Seneca Nation of Indians had identified a location in Henrietta. Interested parties in the debate have been trying to figure out where that might be. There are a couple of large commercial properties for sale near Jefferson Road that are now the subject of speculation.
The group "No More Casinos" Coalition has been hearing rumors about a couple of locations as it prepares to fight any plan to build a casino in this town. One of those is a 32 acre site that sits between East Henrietta and Clay Roads along Interstate 390. News10NBC contacted the developer. They declined comment about whether they've had any discussions with the Senecas.
Another site sits right on Jefferson Road and Clay Road. It is a smaller parcel, but one that fits in the desired proximity to Interstate 390 just a couple of miles from the thruway. News10NBC made several attempts to contact the Seneca Nation but no one has returned a phone call.
The town supervisor says the Senecas told him they're prepared to spend $200 million on a casino and plan to purchase the property within 30 days. In the meantime, "No More Casinos" is gathering a petition to present at the town board meeting on Wednesday night. They claim to have more than 1400 signatures calling on the governor and the state legislature to block the Senecas' plans.
Barbara Hatch said, "It'll be devastating to the restaurants, the hotel business, and we're concerned about being close to MCC, RIT, the University of Rochester and the adverse effects on the community.”
The town supervisor has said that he's personally not a fan of casinos but wants to hear all the facts before presenting them to the residents here. If you want to voice your opinion the town board meeting is this Wednesday at 7pm at town hall.
