A consumer alert for Thruway travelers. If you find yourself stopping at a travel plaza to fill up your gas tank or perhaps eat a snack, the Thruway is taking extra steps to protect your debit and credit card information.

The Thruway Authority says a skimming device was recently discovered on a gas pump at a travel plaza in Rockland County. As a result, it is asking the operators of these plaza to increase efforts to protect travelers' personal information.

Skimming happens when personal information is stolen during what is otherwise a regular transaction.
