The Buffalo Zoo is breaking ground on a new exhibit for the young polar bears it hopes to keep together.
The zoo raised $14 million for the Arctic Edge exhibit. A groundbreaking ceremony is set for Wednesday.
The exhibit set to open next year will feature underwater viewing and more space for the zoo's 1-year-old polar bear cub, Luna, and her visiting playmate, Kali (KULL-lee), a young male that was orphaned in Alaska last spring.
The orphaned bear is expected to remain in Buffalo until the spring of 2015, but officials hope the new exhibit will help Buffalo make the case to keep Kali longer.
The Arctic Edge exhibit also will include arctic wolves, lynx and bald eagles, as well as the zoo's other two polar bears.
