Two men are under arrest after State Police say they stole copper cable from multiple homes throughout Genesee County.

State Police in Batavia say 72-year-old Wayne Pierce and 72-year-old Eugene Reding, both of Attica, began approaching land owners in the towns of Alexander, Darien, and Bethany, asking to dig up cables on their properties. News10NBC is told this started back in 2011.

Police say Pierce and Reding then took the cable to scrap yards and split the proceeds, which exceeded $100,000.

News10NBC is told the investigation began after AT&T officials asked State Police for help in prosecuting the men for the theft of the cable.

Pierce and Reding were arraigned in Alexander Town Court. Both charged with grand larceny and are expected to appear back in court on March 11.

Officials say AT&T is planning to actively work with State Police to investigate other copper cable thefts.
