A Hammondsport man is facing charges after New York State Police say he fabricated a robbery story and stole money from the American Legion on State Route 54 where he worked as a custodian.
Larry R. Smith, 64, of Hammondsport, is charged with burglary, grand larceny and falsifying business records.
Smith was working inside the American Legion building Sunday morning when State Police investigators say Smith told them that he let two people inside after they indicated that their car broke down.
Smith then told State police that the two pulled ski-type masks over their faces, forcibly entered a secured location inside and took off with an undisclosed amount of money. Police say Smith told them that one of the individuals was armed with a weapon.
After further investigating by the state police and finding the money, it was determined that Smith fabricated the story to conceal the fact that he actually stole the money.
Smith was arraigned in the Town of Bath and sent to the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $2,000 cash bail.
