Millions of federal dollars are coming to Rochester to help in the dredging at the Port of Rochester and Irondequoit Bay.

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, who is co-chair of the Great Lakes Task Force, announced an additional $2.2 million for the 2014 fiscal year. It will be used to complete the dredging at the port.

Another $350,000 is going to do the same thing in the bay. Slaughter said silt is a real problem, and up until now, the federal government just hadn’t put the money in the way it should have.

Slaughter said, “Well it means that we can use the port and also for recreational boating. We have a serious silt problem all along our coast along the Great Lakes.”

Slaughter says something new this year is the House determined the Corps of Engineers should use the Great Lakes as a single body so all of the money didn't go to just one state. She mentioned Michigan.

Senator Chuck Schumer sent out a notice Tuesday applauding the funding and Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren thanked Slaughter, Schumer and the Corps of Engineers saying this is good news for project development in Charlotte.
