A Newark man was killed in a one car crash in Seneca County Thursday morning.

The crash happened just before 7:30 a.m. on State Route 96 in the town of Covert.

Sheriff’s deputies say Bernice E. Hammonds, 49, of Dundee, Florida, was going northbound on State Route 96, when he veered off the eastside of the road, striking a ditch. Sheriff’s deputies say the car went airborne and rolled over.

Hammonds’ rear seat passenger, Willy C. Johnson, 67, of Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hammonds and his front seat passenger, Marshall D. Watson, 55, of Rochester, were transported to the hospital. Another passenger in the back seat, James Parker, 53, of Ovid, was flown to the hospital for internal injuries.

Deputies say the crash was caused when Hammonds fell asleep and drifted off the road.
