A College at Brockport student is now facing drug and illegal gun charges after being arrested near campus last week.
The charges stem from a traffic stop Wednesday. Campus police pulled over 21-year-old Dennis Smith for a broken tail light and side mirror. This happened on Holley Street, which runs through campus, but is technically off-campus. When the officer was talking to him, he noticed the smell of marijuana. After searching the car, the campus police officer says he found a bag of marijuana in the driver’s side door.
While the officer was arresting Smith, we are told Smith told the officer he had a gun on him. The officer found a small loaded hand gun inside Smith’s car. Smith told police he had the gun for his own protection.
The chief of campus police says Smith cooperated and never made any threats to anyone on campus or in the community.
Smith was arraigned in Sweden Town Court, sent to the Monroe County Jail where he is currently out on bail. We do not know his current status with the College at Brockport.
