Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren has only been in office for three months and she has already taken four trips to Washington, D.C. This has many people wondering if the mayor is eyeing a congressional run.
Mayor Warren says she is not running for Congress. She did say she has heard the rumors about her challenging Louise Slaughter, but right now, she says she is working for the people of Rochester.
Mayor Lovely Warren, City of Rochester, said, I'm flattered, but I just got elected to be the mayor of the city of Rochester, and I am focused on that.”
Four trips to D.C. in three months with no congressional run in sight has many wondering what Warren is doing there? The mayor says she is trying to secure mayor grants that will help city education programs and reduce the poverty rates.
Warren said, “I’m a different type of mayor. I want to tell the story of Rochester. I want to go across this country and let people know that we are a resilient city and have a lot to be proud of and the best person to do that is me. I want to be very, very clear upfront. This is about moving forward and supporting our dean and congresswoman that is already there.”
News10NBC learned Warren raised $400,000 this weekend at the mayor’s ball. The mayoral election is four years away, so why fundraise now?
Warren said, “You can't start four years from now. You have to continue to raise money every year.”
The thought was that Warren would go after Congresswoman Louise Slaughter's seat in November.
Congresswoman Louise Slaughter said, “Lovely and I have been friends for a very long time and she was very helpful in our last race. She worked really hard for us and I’m sure she will again.”
At 84-years-old Slaughter is the oldest woman in Congress. So will she run again?
Slaughter said, “Oh yes, I’m signed up. My petitions are on the street.”
Slaughter says she is in. Mayor Warren says she is staying at City Hall.
