Smoke alarm triggers East Avenue closure

A portion of East Avenue in Rochester between Chestnut and Scio Street is back open after firefighters say the area was forced to close because of a report of smoke in a high-rise apartment building.

Firefighters say crews were called to the scene around 10:30 p.m. Monday after a smoke alarm in an eighth floor apartment building went off. Firefighters say the smoke started after items that were left on the radiator began to smoke.

Officials say the situation was brought under control quickly. Firefighters cleared residents off the floor but they were soon allowed back inside.
