Preparing students for college and success after graduation is the mission of the AVID program. News10NBC learned one local school is using the program in the classroom.

On Tuesday afternoon, the East Irondequoit Middle School was recognized as an AVID Designation School. It’s the only one in the state to receive this distinction. This means the school enrolls students in more challenging courses like AP classes and accelerated learning programs.

Mark Hanson, East Irondequoit Middle School Prinicipal, said, “They've really dedicated themselves to pushing themselves academically staff has pushed themselves instructionally, and it’s just a great feeling."

This is the fifth year the school has earned the distinction.
