Firefighters have spent the night battling a massive fire in the Town of Ovid's main business district.
Witnesses say the fire started inside a restaurant and then spread into apartment buildings nearby.
This fire has had a devastating impact for the village. The fire has not only burned buildings, it has closed businesses and forced several people from their homes.
Rosario Saeli, who lives nearby, says "I heard two loud explosions, it was overwhelming.">
The fire started around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening. People who live nearby, say they heard a terrible noise.
"I never heard a sound like that before," says Saeli.
Turns out the noise came from two large propane tanks that were venting fire. Firefighters quickly put water on them to keep them cool. Witnesses say the fire started somewhere in one of the buildings near the corner and spread fast and furiously. Some of these buildings have been here since the 1800's and are wooden.
William Palmer Sr., Ovid Fire Chief, says, "It's a small community, you think about these things, you plan for them and hope they never happen. Today it got us."
The fire damaged a restaurant, a town assessors office, a chinese restaurant and an apartment building. It was tough for the locals to watch.
Ovid Mayor David Terry says, "There's a lot of people that live up there. That apartment building has four families. This place has two families, everything they have is gone... everything."
Scores of people gathered of people as as many as 100 firefighters battled the stubborn blaze. Firefighters expect to be at it for several more hours, maybe even all night to make sure the fire is out and all is safe.
