Raising awareness for those who suffer from brain injuries is the goal of the annual Brain Waves Benefit.

Every year, one person in the community is honored with a "Community Hero Award" at the event.

This year's winner is Sam Steirman, a 22-year-old Army veteran who received a traumatic brain injury while on active duty in Iraq. Steirman has since become an advocate for veterans transitioning back to civilian life.

Organizers say brain injuries happen to more people every day than anyone realizes.

Elaine Comarella, Hickok Center for Brain Injury CEO, said, "It's important for people to remember that anybody around them at any point could have a brain injury, or that any one of us could have one at any minute, and how important it is to support those people in the community."

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month.
