A storage building at Wayside Garden Center in Macedon on Route 31 went up in flames around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Len Sorbello opened the garden center more than 40 years ago. He’s never had to deal with anything like this. Firefighters were there for six hours battling the flames and putting out hot spots. At times, the flames were intense. Route 31 was closed for a few hours because of the fire.

No one was hurt. Sorbello said even their cats at the garden center escaped the flames.

There were some concerns. Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputies say they were worried about gas tanks on the property. Fire officials say there was fertilizer in the building, but luckily, there were no explosions.

Len Sorbello, Wayside Garden Center, said, “We had a couple of trucks and Bobcats and a forklift and inventory. We had some losses, no question. First thing is to get power restored so we can get the greenhouses going and get my employees back to work.”

Wayside opened as usual at 9:00 a.m. Sorbello says it looks like they saved most of the spring crop.

Investigators say the fire started in the west side of the building. No word yet on the cause.
